What is Random Seating Chart Generator
You have the names and the room layout, but still need to place everyone. Paste the roster, set the rows and seats per row, and generate a chart you can print or copy into your notes.
How to use Random Seating Chart Generator
-
Paste one person per line. Use up to 100 people, with labels of at most 60 characters. Give matching names distinct labels, such as Alex A and Alex B.
-
Choose 1–10 Rows and 1–10 Seats per row. Their product must provide enough seats for everyone. Row 1 is nearest the front.
-
Click Generate Seating Chart. Assigned seats appear below the controls; unused seats are marked Empty. On narrow screens, scroll inside the chart to see every column.
-
Use Copy Seating List to copy row and seat labels, or Print Chart to open your browser print dialog. A print-to-PDF option may be available there.
-
Click Generate Seating Chart again to reshuffle. Editing the roster or dimensions clears the old chart. Clear removes results while leaving your inputs available.
Features
- Rectangular layouts up to 10 rows by 10 seats.
- Checks empty lists, duplicate labels, label length and insufficient capacity.
- Randomly distributes empty seats as well as people.
- Browser-only roster processing, copyable seat list and chart printing.
Use Cases
Use the chart for a classroom, workshop or informal activity. Check accessibility and practical seating needs before using the plan: this version does not support locked seats, separation rules, dragging, table groups or saved rosters. The layout is viewed from the back of the room toward the front, with seat numbers increasing left to right.

FAQ
Where is the front of the room?
The top of the chart is labeled FRONT OF ROOM. Row 1 is nearest that edge, and seat numbers run left to right as shown.
What happens to unused seats?
They remain empty and can occur anywhere in the chart. Names are assigned without duplication to a random selection of the available seats.
Does this upload or save my roster?
The seating tool runs in your browser and does not send the roster to a server or save it in local storage. Copying and printing are actions you choose.
Can I keep two students apart?
This version does not support placement constraints or locked seats. Review the random plan and make any necessary changes outside the tool.
