Random Rhythm Generator

Get a short rhythm to clap, count, or practice at your own tempo.

4/4 time, with eight equal slots per bar. Count “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &”. X means a hit; a dash means a rest. Each bar has the selected number of hits.

Your rhythm

Your beat grid will appear here.

Playback uses short synthesized clicks, once through the grid. Rests are silent. No recordings, drum samples, swing or staff notation.

What is Random Rhythm Generator

This generator creates one, two or four bars in 4/4 time. Every bar has eight equal eighth-note slots, with exactly two, four or six hits depending on the density you choose. Hits are marked X and rests are marked with a dash. It provides a beat grid, not staff notation.

How to use Random Rhythm Generator

  1. Choose 1, 2 or 4 bars and a hit density. Each bar has eight equal slots in 4/4 time.

  2. Set a whole-number tempo from 40 to 200 BPM, then click Generate Rhythm. The grid appears below the controls.

  3. Read X as a hit and a dash as a rest. Click Play Rhythm to hear one pass and follow the moving highlight; Stop ends playback.

  4. Change BPM to practice the same grid at a new speed, then press Play Rhythm again. Changing bars or density clears the grid.

  5. Use Copy Rhythm to save the text notation. Generate Rhythm makes a new pattern, which may repeat an earlier one.

Features

  • 1, 2 or 4 bars, with a fixed hit count in each bar.
  • 40–200 BPM playback using synthesized clicks and a moving highlight.
  • Tempo changes preserve the current pattern; text notation can be copied.

Use Cases

Clap the X slots while saying “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &”. Sparse patterns leave more space; busy ones have more hits. There is no count-in or background metronome, and playback runs once. A hit on the first slot of a bar uses a higher click. Use Play Rhythm again to repeat the exercise.

Rhythms are generated algorithmically using uniformly sampled hit positions within each bar. Audio is synthesized in the browser; no external recording or sample library is used.

FAQ

Is there a count-in or metronome?

No. Playback starts at the beginning of the grid without a count-in. Only hit slots sound; rests are silent.

Can I change the speed without a new rhythm?

Yes. Changing BPM stops playback but preserves the grid and updates its copyable text. Press Play Rhythm to hear the new speed.

Does it export audio or sheet music?

No. This version offers browser playback and text notation, without audio downloads, staff notation or swing.
